Located 30-minutes from Damariscotta on the Maine coast, 20-minutes from Augusta and about 2 hours from Sugarloaf and Sunday River ski areas this post and beam, center chimney cape was built in 1976. The house is 2800 square feet with three bedrooms; two full bathrooms; new kitchen and dining room; two home offices; sitting room, living room with a charming fireplace and a great room; and a two-car garage. Every room is up-to-date with wide-pine floors, built-in cabinets and many other extras. The homestead has a horse barn and sits 600 feet off Route 32 on a hill. It is surrounded by nearly 17 acres of fields, pastures, woodlot and extensive perennial gardens.
The House
Sitting on top of a hill the house is a traditional New England post and beam, center chimney, cedar shingled cape that was built in 1976. Just two families have lived here. The house is 2800 square feet with three bedrooms (there is the potential to create a master suite on the first floor); two full bathrooms; two home offices; sitting room, living room with a charming fireplace and a great room; new kitchen with cherry cabinets and Maine granite counters and dining room; coat room; and a two-car garage. There are wide-pumpkin pine floors, built-in cabinets and drawers and many other extras. There is a deck outside for entertaining that connects the home to the outdoors. In the finished basement, which originally served as a carpeted playroom for children, work was started on bonus room and the basement also has an indoor workspace. The maple tree lined driveway is 600’ long setting the house well back from the road.
Utilities - The house is well insulated with double-pane windows. It is heated by gas, wood (forced hot air furnace, fireplace and Swedish wood stove) and electric. The wood furnace has a coil that makes unlimited hot water. Electrical lines to the house are buried and FairPoint provides high-speed Internet. Cable service is available from the road. DirectTV provides television service. There is a drilled well (the water tastes great). The tank for the septic system is pumped every three years.
The home is 30 minutes from Damariscotta on the Maine coast, 20 minutes to Augusta and approximately 2 hours to ski areas (Sugarloaf and Sunday River). Portland (and the Jetport) is a little over an hour. Damariscotta Lake, designated by Yankee Magazine as one of New England’s top 10 lakes, is 10 minutes away with excellent swimming, boating and fishing. There is a public boat ramp about 10 minutes from the house. There is a private beach for Jefferson residents adjacent to the State Park beach. The tennis courts in town are also popular. The new Jefferson Village School opened in 2012. In sum, all the things that the coast and Capitol offer are close by!
Flower Gardens & Landscaping
With the changing seasons Harvest Hill is transformed by hundreds of perennial flowers and plants, ferns, flowering bushes (Azaleas, Cotoneaster, Forsythia, Honeysuckle, Mountain Laurel, Rhododendron, etc.), hedges (Privet, Euonymus/Burning Bush, arborvitae, and over 20 kinds of ground cover. The glaciers deposited tons of stone, much of which has been moved into walls that crisscross the property – many are over 5’ wide and hundreds of feet long. They provide an unlimited supply of building material to create patios and walkways, retaining walls, and raised beds.
Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs
The origins of Harvest Hill date back to the 1960's when it was part of a 150 acre low-bush blueberry farm. Today a six acre field behind the house is full of all the blueberries needed in the kitchen. There is also a high-bush blueberry close to the house for blueberries on your morning cereal. There are two varieties of apple trees, a cultivated raspberry patch, rhubarb, and two species of grapes. The maple trees that line the driveway are ready for tapping during maple sugar season.
The vegetable garden (30' x 125') has been tilled spring and fall for over 40-years. Compost was added each year and today the soil is a “gardener’s delight”. In addition, there are four 25’x5’ raised beds that have even richer, well-drained soil that are ready for early spring planting. One of the raised beds is full of Asparagus. A separate herb garden supplies the kitchen with fresh chives, chocolate mint, lemon balm, oregano, sage, spearmint, and thyme.
Pastures, Fields and Woodlot
For many years beef cows, turkeys, chickens and lambs were raised. The barn (25’x25’, cement slab with four stalls, electricity and water, storage bin for stall bedding, overhead hay storage and attached 25’x15’ shed/paddock) was home to 2-3 horses and two ponies. Of the 8+ acres of open land, 2-3 acres are pastures and the remainder is fields. The six-acre woodlot contains Beech, Birch, Maple, Oak and Poplar.
